Darren and I have been wanting to try Scaramella’s in Dobbs Ferry for ages so we figured it would be a great choice for our Friday night ‘dinner date’ after a long week at work. We read some good reviews in Zagats and on Chowhound so our expectations were on the high side.
Scaramella’s is located in a small strip mall just off of 9A in Dobbs Ferry. We were expecting a casual atmosphere and were a little surprised when we walked in as the decor was a mix between an old school Italian restaurant and a run of the mill pizzeria. The tables were covered with white table clothes, the waiters were older Italian men in tuxedos and specials were handwritten on a board and brought to each table. The wood paneling was a sharp contrast to the large windows with aluminum blinds overlooking the parking lot of the strip mall. Sort of an odd combination. The menu had a nice selection though of pasta, chicken, veal and seafood prepared in a variety of different ways. All entrees come with either a salad or pasta or the vegetable of the day and each table receives bruchetta to start with. I thought the bruchetta was excellent, flavorful tomatoes and the right mix of spices. For our entrees, I ordered veal parmigiana, which is one of my favorites and Darren tried the shrimps in white wine and herbs. The veal was a generous size portion but Darren’s shrimp dish was rather skimpy. I thought the veal was sort of tough but the sauce was delicious. I opted for the escarole as my side dish but I wish I went for the pasta instead as the escarole had way too much garlic. Darren wasn’t overly wowed with his shrimp either. It was just ‘okay’. We had tartufo for dessert which is one of my favorites and I have to say we thought that was best part of the meal.
Overall, we’d say Scaramella’s was just okay…probably a 7 out of 10. We certainly prefer Ardsley Pizzeria’s cooking over Scaramella’s.
